Ear wax impaction – does it really impact you?

Updated: Apr 29, 2024

Before we discuss removing ear wax its important to understand why we have ear wax.  Ear wax is medically known as cerumen. It is made by the hair follicles that line the ear canal and it is normal to have ear wax. Ear wax is there as a preventative measure to stop dust, dirt and other objects getting into your ears that shouldn’t be there. The skin of the ear canal naturally migrates outwards and takes the wax with it so for most people the ear is self cleaning.

In some patients the ear does not self clean – this can be due to a variety of causes such as prior surgery, instrumentation of the ear canal, hearing aids or even very hairy ears. This can lead to symptoms such as a blocked ear, decreased or muffled hearing, pain and very occasionally dizziness.

When excess wax causes a problem then its time to consult a medical professional. As an experienced ENT consultant I have removed ear wax from thousands of ears. I do this using magnification, a bright light and specialist instruments. This means I can clean your ears to a complete wax free state but more importantly I can assess your general ear health and make sure there are no underlying issues.

An article I wrote for an ENT journal on ear wax can be found here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25017385/

If ear wax is causing you problems please get in touch and let myself, an experienced ENT consultant sort this problem for you.
